Rams fall on road; Cobras romp, 35-7

SHERWOOD — A week after earning coach Jared McBride’s praise in a loss to Joe T. Robinson, Lakeside’s defense showed signs of past struggles in a 48-22 loss at Sylvan Hills Friday night.

Deon Youngblood gashed the Rams for 263 yards on the ground, scoring six touchdowns. Youngblood ran for three scores and had a 16-yard touchdown reception as Sylvan Hills went up 35-8 by halftime.

Though scoring 14 second-half points, Lakeside suffered five turnovers and had a punt blocked.

Lakeside running backs Michael James and Dupree Swanson provided a lethal one-two punch, but Taylor Gilham completed just three of 11 passes for 79 yards with three intercepti­ons.

James carried eight times for 127 yards and Swanson five for 115. Sylvan Hills quarterbac­k Ryan Lumpkin had touchdown passes to Ty Compton and Youngblood in the first half.

Torin Davis paced the Rams with two catches for 64 yards and Carson Muldoon hauled in one pass for 15 yards. David Regenhardt led Lakeside with six tackles while senior Brandon Chambers recorded four stops.

Lakeside (0-2) hosts Malvern next week at Austin Field before its conference opener Sept. 22 against visiting Camden Fairview.

Fountain Lake-HHG

HASKELL — Scoring 27 unanswered points in the first half, Fountain Lake routed Haskell Harmony Grove 35-7 Friday night on Jimmy “Red” Parker Field in J.D. Plumlee’s first victory as the Cobras’ head coach.

Quarterbac­k Stephen Turner connected with Parion Johnson for touchdown strikes of 69 and 80 yards in the first half while Joe Murphy returned a Hunter Hilson intercepti­on 40 yards for a score.

Turner found Ahman Johnson from seven yards out in the third quarter for a 35-0 lead, enacting the mercy rule. Turner completed 10 of 13 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns.

The Cardinals averted the shutout on Logan Whitley’s 10yard touchdown run with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Ahman Johnson paced the Cobras with 133 yards on four receptions while Parion Johnson had five catches for 120 yards. Andrew Roberson (10 carries for 36 yards) led Fountain Lake’s ground game.

Colson Simpson led the Cobras with six tackles and Murphy finished with five. Senior Ben Chaney finished with three tackles and one sack.

Hilson completed 12 of 17 passes for 71 yards for Harmony Grove, junior Jayce Shelnutt with seven catches for 55 yards and also a team-high 55 yards rushing.

Fountain Lake (1-1) travels to Smackover next week before its conference opener Sept. 22 against visiting Joe T. Robinson.
