Celebrate Masters of Aging during Senior Center Month

-

When someone says “senior center,” images of bingo may be the first thing that comes to mind, but today’s senior center is so much more. During National Senior Center Month, CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs Senior Center will celebrate the vital community resources it provides as Garland County’s masters of aging.

From evidence-based wellness classes to line dance and tap dance to tai chi and healthy eating and cooking classes, Hot Springs Senior Center is a community nexus where seniors find friendship, meaning and purpose. To highlight the power of these programs and activities, Hot Springs Senior Center has planned a special celebration for National Senior Center Month: The Roaring ’20s — from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. “Enjoy a brief commentary of Hot Springs history in the ’20s from Robert Raines, manager of The Gangster Museum, stay for lunch, get on your feet with lively music and dancing, get your photo taken by Joy Brazwell, manager of Walgreens on Malvern, and enter the costume contest for a fun prize,” states the press release.

“Today’s seniors aren’t looking to slow down,” said Judy Rowe, site manager of center. “They want to make new friends, learn new skills and remain relevant in the community. We support their curiosity and growth through fun and engaging programs, while also providing practical tools and resources to help them stay healthy and independent.”

This year’s national theme, “Senior Centers: Masters of Aging,” emphasizes the knowledge and experience senior centers bring to their communities, including programming that empowers older adults to be strong, confident and independent, enlightens them by broadening their horizons to new choices and adventures; engages those seeking a welcoming space and an opportunity to develop friendships; and enriches participants and the larger community.

Hot Springs Senior Center provides congregate meals, various lifelong learning educational programs, monthly blood sugar and blood pressure checks, volunteer opportunities and more.
