Republican Women to learn scam prevention

-

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Rachel Ellis, with the Arkansas State Attorney General’s office, will discuss how to prevent being scammed during the presentation “Identity Theft and Consumer Fraud,” as part of the next Hot Springs Village Republican Women’s meeting, set for 10 a.m. Sept. 21 in the Ponce de Leon Center.

For those who have received phone calls like, “Grandma, this is your grandson. I’m in Tijuana and I need you to wire me $300 bail money to get out of jail,” or an email claiming the winning of a $50,000 lottery if the person will provide Social Security and bank account numbers, these are indeed scams. Prevention is possible, and Ellis will share about how to avoid disaster.

Working in the Attorney General’s office for more than a decade, she is now the event coordinator and a community educator in the Public Affairs Division. Ellis spends much of her time traveling the state to discuss topics relevant to senior communities about scams.

HSVRW meetings are held the third Thursday of each month, from September through May. These informative programs provide opportunities for attendees to understand current issues, meet with elected officials and candidates to determine their positions, and to participate in fundraisers to help support Republican candidates.

Guests are welcome to attend, and reservations are not required. Refreshments will be available just prior to the meeting.
