Piano recital to feature University of Arkansas professor of piano

-

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Linda Holzer, professor of piano at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, will present a piano recital at 3 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 199 Barcelona Road.

A slideshow in the fellowship hall will precede the program which is free and open to the public. A reception follows in Sifford Hall.

The program, “Masterpieces by American Women Composers,” opens with “Suite for Trumpet & Piano” by American composer Gwyneth Walker. “Suite for Trumpet” is a creative meditation on themes of peace, for which Holzer will be joined by her colleague, ASO principal trumpeter and Holy Trinity member Richard Jorgensen.

The performance of this suite occurs during Arkansas Peace Week, and relates to the observance of the United Nation’s International Day of Peace.

The remainder of the program features solo piano music by Gwyneth Walker, Margaret Bonds, Valerie Capers, and the majestic “Piano Sonata in E Minor” by celebrated American composer and Little Rock native, Florence Price.

Holzer joined the music faculty at UALR in 1995. An active soloist and chamber musician, she has been heard in concert in 30 states, and most recently, abroad in Melbourne, Australia, where she was a featured performer at the Australian Piano Pedagogy Conference. She enjoys designing concert programs that combine familiar repertoire with music that deserves to be heard more often, a news release said.

Jorgensen is professor emeritus from Arkansas State University, and adjunct professor at UALR. He has been principal trumpet with the Arkansas Symphony since 1976.
