Legacy endowment established in Munro’s honor
The Hot Springs Area Community Foundation Board of Directors recently established the Don Munro Legacy Endowment to provide ongoing support for charitable causes in Garland and Montgomery counties.
The fund was created upon Munro’s retirement from the board to honor his dedication to smart giving in Arkansas and his years of service to the foundation, the board said in a news release Wednesday.
Munro was a founding board member of the Arkansas Community Foundation, a statewide nonprofit organization. He served as board chair from 1988 to 1990, and later became a charter board member of the local Hot Springs Area Community Foundation, founded in 1991 as an affiliate of the Arkansas Community Foundation.
Past and present board members of the Hot Springs Area Community Foundation, representatives of the Giving Circle, and members of the community gathered Aug. 29 in Hot Springs to honor Munro at a luncheon celebrating his retirement from the foundation’s board.
“Don has a decades-old record of generosity personally and through his company, Munro Shoes,” Heather Larkin, president and CEO of Arkansas Community Foundation, said in the release.
“In addition, his wisdom and guidance have done much to shape our successful statewide foundation and the Hot Springs affiliate,” Larkin said.
Munro is the co-founder of the Giving Circle and the Hot Springs Cultural Alliance.
“Statewide, his work has impacted the
nonprofit sector through his service with the Arkansas Arts Center, Arkansas Nature Conservancy” and National Park College, the release said.
Munro said in the release, that, while officially retired, he plans to continue his charitable efforts in his community.
“It’s time to give up my seat on the local board to a younger person,” Munro said. “But, I continue to stand ready to be helpful, should any need arise.”
