Hosta, shade plant society meets Saturday

Ouachita Hosta and

Shade Plant Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Garvan Woodland Garden, Magnolia Room, no charge if attending the meeting. Refreshmen­ts and a social begins at 9:30 a.m. The speaker will be Madeline Samec, Compton Gardens site manager.

She was born to two gardeners, so everywhere her dad was station, they all gardened. She has gardened in places like Germany, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, Georgia, Florida and Arkansas.

She completed the Florida Master Gardener Program and has managed the St. Johns County Extension Community Gardens, 200 St. Johns County Master Gardeners. In 2013, she became a certified GI-BMP instructor and in 2014 the landscape management of 54 acres was added to her job descriptio­n.

She volunteers to speak at libraries, gardening organizati­ons, community events, and give garden tours. She teaches classes such as seed to plants, moss gardening, how to propagate, cut gardens.

She went to Eckerd College, in St. Petersburg and has a BS in Sociology, Political Science and History.

Driver safety class at HSV Unitarian Universali­st

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — An AARP Smart Driver course will be sponsored by Unitarian Universali­st Village Church, 403 Barcelona Road, Hot Springs Village, at noon Sept. 28. Qualified graduates are eligible for an auto insurance discount.

There is a $15 fee for AARP members and $20 fee for nonmembers to cover course materials. Bring your driver’s license and, if applicable, AARP membership card. Call 501-226-5100 to enroll.
