Free NAMI course to begin Oct. 3

A free NAMI Family to Family 12-session education program for family, partners, friends and significan­t others who provide care for adults living with mental illness will start Oct. 3 in Hot Springs.

The course is designed to help all family members understand and support their loved one living with mental illness, while maintainin­g their own well-being. The course includes informatio­n on illnesses such as schizophre­nia, bipolar disorder, major depression and other mental health conditions.

The program is taught by trained teachers who are family members and know what it is like to have a loved one living

with mental illness.

NAMI Arkansas, the state chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will offer the course from 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Oct. 3.

MPGS’ Tuesday topic on ancestry website

Melting Pot Genealogic­al Society will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Melting Pot Library, 649-B Ouachita Ave. Barbara Erdman, the Melting Pot librarian, will present a program on the genealogy subscripti­on service, Ancestry.com. The general public is welcome. The meeting will be followed by a hands-on workshop. Interested members should bring their laptops. The library has a wireless connection.

MPGS maintains a library whose collection­s include more than 9,000 publicatio­ns. Library hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Friday or by appointmen­t, 624-0229. The staff is an all-volunteer group of people interested in preserving and making available to the public the histories of families of Garland County and other areas.

VCK Democratic Women topic on cannabis in GC

Virginia Clinton Kelley Democratic Women will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Landmark Building, 201 Market St. Refreshmen­ts will be served at 5 p.m. Guest speakers will be Michael Butler, CEO and director of operations for Green Remedies Group, and Don R. Brewington Jr., CFO and director of finance. Green Remedies Group is involved in bringing cannabis to Garland County.

Butler holds a doctorate in pharmacy, and owns and operates pharmacies in Arkansas, including two in Hot Springs Village. Brewington is a CLU and financial planner in Little Rock and CEO of Brewington Capital.
