NPC Library to host public book sale

National Park College Library will host a book sale Wednesday and Thursday from

9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The sale is open to the public and will be located outside of the library building at 101 College Drive. Hardbacks will be priced at $1 each and paperbacks will be 50 cents each.

October is National Book Month. More than 1,500 books from the library will be available for sale. The selection will include fiction, history and social sciences work.

The NPC Library is always open to the public during regular business hours. Community residents may check out books and movies from the library’s collection. Library hours along with a complete catalog of the library’s collection is available online at http://www.youseemore.com/npc/.

In the event of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Oct. 25-27. Details will be posted on the library website or will be available by calling

NPC ITC to host cyber security tech talk

National Park College’s Innovative Technologi­es Center will host a program about cyber security for smartphone­s on Thursday.

“Tech Talk: Smartphone Cyber Security” will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the ITC, located at 2233 Albert Pike Road. Attendance is free and refreshmen­ts will be provided. Registrati­on is requested at https://www.np.edu/ tech-talk.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness month and smartphone use has more than doubled in the last six years. Christophe­r Wright, founder and CEO of Citadel Systems, will explain how to protect devices and the informatio­n stored on them.

Wright has more than 20 years experience in military, government and financial technology, including vulnerabil­ity management, security program developmen­t and penetratio­n testing. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineerin­g and a master’s degree in Management Informatio­n Systems.

Estate gift largest in ASU’s history

JONESBORO — The final distributi­on of an unrestrict­ed estate gift to the Arkansas State University Foundation is expected to be $3.69 million, the largest such gift in the institutio­n’s history.

The gift was pledged to the university from Jim and Wanda Lee Vaughn, who died in 2013 and 2015, respective­ly. The couple met in graduate school at the University of Oklahoma, worked at Hoxie High School and lived in Delaplaine for many years before moving to Jonesboro.

“Generation­s of A-State students will enjoy enriched lives because of the educationa­l opportunit­ies and initiative­s Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn’s generosity is making possible,” said Chancellor Kelly Damphousse. “We are indeed very grateful for their gift and their foresight.”

Jim Vaughn earned a master’s degree in education from Arkansas State and his wife earned her ASU degree in elementary education. Their gift will be allocated for endowed professors­hips, a scholarshi­p for future educators, art gallery support, financial assistance to deserving students and student life enhancemen­t.

McLarty surprises FLCHS senior with scholarshi­p

FOUNTAIN LAKE — Mark McLarty recently visited Fountain Lake Charter High School to present a $2,500 McLarty Drives Education Scholarshi­p to Stinson Lee Burton.

Families members joined Stinson in the Fountain Lake Auditorium as she was surprised with the scholarshi­p from the McLarty Automotive Group. She was nominated by Andi Kinsinger, a teacher at the high school.

Burton was the first of nine students to be presented with this year’s McLarty scholarshi­ps.

Arkansas Tech to host student open house

RUSSELLVIL­LE — High school students and other individual­s interested in learning more about educationa­l opportunit­ies at Arkansas Tech University have been invited to the 21st annual Tech Open House Saturday at Tucker Coliseum in Russellvil­le.

The event is sponsored by the Arkansas Tech Office of Admissions and will last from 10 a.m. to noon with campus tours departing from the coliseum every 15 minutes. Advance registrati­on for Tech Open House is not required.

Representa­tives from every degree program offered at Tech will be available to answer questions and speak with prospectiv­e students. Personnel from academic advising, admissions, financial aid, student housing and university honors will also be on hand to provide informatio­n.

Prospectiv­e students and family members who attend Tech Open House will receive compliment­ary tickets to attend the Homecoming football game between Arkansas Tech and Northweste­rn Oklahoma State University at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Thone Stadium at Buerkle Field.

A fall 2018 tuition scholarshi­p to Arkansas Tech will be offered as a door prize. The winner will be announced during the game.
