A trip down memory lane

-

Dear editor:

Trying to keep up with what is happening in the world and in our communities is a challenge! In the meantime, one should also try to maintain a sense of humor whenever possible.

During the controversy over kneeling at the football games or joining arm to arm for the players, I thought how I was taught to kneel and say my prayers as a child, so that is what came to my mind. Now, of course, as a senior citizen, I am unable to kneel!

People can look at the same picture and see different things. I determined that whether kneeling or standing, it really doesn’t matter. Either way, God hears our prayers. We try to reach out to our neighbors near and far.

This brings me to the article I recently read about Johnny Cash: I love music, some of all kinds of music. As far as country is concerned, Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers were two of my favorites. I also like the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony and includes the great music of the Muses here in Hot Springs.

Now back to Johnny Cash, his home is now open to visitors after having been restored, I read.

I always enjoyed visiting the island of Jamaica some years ago when I was doing a bit of traveling. On one of my visits, I was told that Johnny Cash had a home on the island. What a surprised me was that Johnny Cash was beloved by the people for his humanitarian efforts for children. I was told that he bore the expenses for a nursery for kids. So every year or so when I returned, I would make sure I passed his home.

Some members of our group decided that we would donate gifts to people that needed help. We were inspired by Johnny Cash. Musicians like B.B. King, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong became great ambassadors for our country.

I identify with his performances for prisoners. I once did some poetry readings in a jail house in the Chicago area. Music is truly an international language. The Man in Black lives on through his music.

Let’s not forget James Brown and Stevie Wonder and many others, including Kris Kristofferson, Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson.

This ends my trip down memory lane, sorry it took so long!

Love and blessings to all, Hazel Wright Hot Springs
