Fundraiser ‘thanks’

-

Dear editor:

On behalf of the Literacy Council of Garland County, I would like to extend thanks to the many people and artists who helped with our organization’s most recent fundraiser, Bacchus, Books and Bargains. The fundraiser garnered funds much needed for building maintenance, including some broken windows recently damaged by storms. Attendees were generous with their donations and the night was successful.

We’d like to publicly thank those who donated their talents to making this event so successful. We greatly appreciate our sponsor, Kristine Artymowski, for providing the beautiful venue, The Whittington Place, for the event. The spacious former church hosted Bohemian Sauce, the musical partnership of Dr. Marck Beggs and Luke Pittman, 10-yearold rising poet Alana Spencer and her equally poetic mother, Shannon Buck, several local belly dancers from Unveiled Belly Dance Theatre, musician Alex Ball and jewelry maker Zetta Ballew.

The Literacy Council strives to raise money not only for building maintenance, but also for curriculum needed to teach struggling adults how to read and write. We gladly accept donations of gift certificates, yard sale leftovers, cash or volunteer hours to help with special projects and fundraisers. Your donations are tax deductible and stay in our county.

If you missed our October fundraiser, please join us for our November fundraiser, “Spell Yeah! Not your grandkids spelling bee!” This adult spelling bee, held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Literacy Council’s headquarters,

119 Hobson Ave., is open to the first 20 adults to sign up. There is a $5 competition fee and four prizes, with the first prize of $100 cash. Come join us for a laid back night of fun, spelling and acting like big kids! Wine by donation will be available, along with our used book sale.

For more information on the spelling bee or to help with this or other projects for the LCGC, please contact board member Lana Pierce at 501-545-0044.

Thank you. Laura Lee Williard Executive director
