Time of denial is over

-

Dear editor:

We are living in a time of unprecedented anxiety and fear about the future, yet there are some who don’t see it. It seems many citizens have lost the ability to discern between good and evil, right from wrong, honesty and dishonesty, and even seem to not understand the difference between moral and immoral. Many are so confused they, in fact, treat things that are harmful for our future as good. Just to name a few, things like HR 861 terminating the Environmental Protection Agency, HR 899 terminating the Department of Education, HJR 69 repeal rules protecting wildlife, HR 370 repeals health care for millions of citizens, HR147 criminalizing abortion and HR 785 National Right to Work that ends unions.

There is now unbelief as we watch Trump dealing with foreign countries, especially North Korea. There is now anger at an administration that has no control and apparently is in total chaos. There is now a mistrust of a Republican-controlled Congress with a 14 percent approval rating that is unable to accomplish its task.

There was a time when I was proud of my country. There was a time when I was proud to serve my country in the military. And now I feel shame and embarrassment as an American watching our president persistent in bringing down this country with his incompetence and even an inability to show empathy for the widow of a fallen hero calling her a liar. He is the liar and repetitively seems unable to separate fact from fiction. It is a recognized reality that he is not capable to lead us forward.

As a person who has always been optimistic and hopeful, I also need to be honest. The time of denial needs to be over. It is painful to see what has happened to this country and what continues to happen. We have lost our way, our greatness and we are losing our democracy. George Lindholm Hot Springs
