Spa City golfers win LR tourney
LITTLE ROCK — Hot Springs golfers Cal Campbell and Ed Tallach won their division of a senior team tournament here Monday at War Memorial Park.
With a 140, Campbell and Tallach took the Ben Hogan Division by one stroke over the Arkadelphia team of Max Brown and Jackie Smith. Sheridan’s Glen Talbert and Bryant’s Sam McAllister were third at 142.
Veterans Bobby Baker, of Little Rock, and Bev Hargraves, of
West Helena, blitzed the Jack Fleck Division with a 5-under
123. They had 3-under 29s in the better-ball first round and modified alternate-shot second round, then teamed for an 18hole score of 65 in stroke play. Tying for second were Fred Stamey (Hot Springs Village) and Gregg Connell (Russellville) and the Little Rock team of Kirby Webb and Curtis Savoy.
Defending champions Jay Fox and Wyn Norwood did not defend the title they won last year at Hot Springs’ Belvedere Country Club.
Amateur golfers keep ‘Randy Beaver’ crown
Arkansas State Golf Association members turned the annual Randy Beaver Cup matches into a runaway victory for the defending champions at Hot Springs Country Club.
The amateur team won 13 1/2 of a possible 16 points in singles matches Sunday, crusing to their sixth consecutive victory over the Arkansas PGA chapter. The amateurs totaled 24.5 points and the professionals 7.5 in three phases of competition, their sixth overall championship in eight years since the annual series was renamed in memory of a former Cabot pro.
Amateur players are determined through a series of ASGA-sponored tournaments and professionals through a number of chapter events.
Barry Howard, Hot Springs Country Club’s general manager and golf director, has said the amateurs should be favored in any year because they have more time to play while the pros are busy giving lessons.
Howard lost his singles match 2 and 1 to Pine Bluff veteran Wes McNulty while HSCC assistant pro Phillip Holley lost 4 and 3 to amateur Mark Graham. Hot Springs golfer Ronnie Johnson routed professional opponent Tim Jenkins 7 and 6.
Holley won a four-ball match Saturday with Henderson State golf coach Forrest Schultz and teamed with Jon Burton to defeat McNulty and Little Rock veteran Chris Jenkins in a foursome match.
