Lakeside swims to fifth at Conway meet

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

CONWAY — Lakeside finished fifth in last week’s Conway High School Invitational swim meet at the University of Central Arkansas, finishing behind one 6A and three 7A teams.

The combined score for Lakeside was 201, placing the team fifth behind Conway (966), Fayetteville (784), Bryant (595) and Benton

(262).

Lakeside finished fifth in the girls meet with

142 total points, and the boys team finished eighth with 59.

The girls 200-meter relay team, consisting of Lydia Cevela, Nicole Burek, Sarah-Marie Linneman and Aly Navarro, finished fifth with a time of 2:13.64, qualifying for the state meet.

The girls 200-meter freestyle relay team of Lexi Giombetti, Burek, Navarro and Linneman finished eighth with a time of 2:06.37. Two other Lakeside teams competed in the event, finishing

11th and 13th.

Burek took silver in both the 100-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke, qualifying for the state meet in both events. She touched in 58.91 seconds in the freestyle and 1:13.42 in the breaststroke.

Linneman qualified for the state meet in both the 200-meter individual medley and the

100-meter freestyle. She took bronze in the

100-meter freestyle with a time of 59.89 seconds, and she finished fifth in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:33.55.

Mason Vondenstein took silver in the

200-meter IM and the 100-meter backstroke to earn a state meet berth. He finished in 57.60 seconds in the backstroke and 2:07.30 in the IM.

A.J. Navarro’s fifth place finish in the 50-meter freestyle and eighth-place finish in the

200-meter freestyle qualified him for the state meet. He finished the 50-meter event in 25.38 seconds, and he touched the wall in 2:13.77 in the 200-meter.

“We had several swimmers with times that qualified them for the state swim meet at season’s end,” said coach Brad Launius. “They have worked hard in the pre-season; running distance to build endurance, sprints to enhance their starts, and lifting weights to help in all areas. They continue to work hard each practice and many have cut time from their previous bests.”

Lakeside’s next meet will be Dec. 7 at the Boys and Girls Club pool in Bryant.
