Ree Drummond bakes up success

- By Andrew Warren

What’s a city-girl-turnedcountry-gal to do while she’s at home on the range? For Ree Drummond, building a blogging, culinary and lifestyle empire while still finding time to raise a happy family seems to be what was in the cards.

The host of Food Network’s “The Pioneer Woman,” currently airing new episodes Saturday mornings, started out as just a humble blogger way back in 2006, writing about life on a ranch in Oklahoma and about homeschooling her kids, but once she started posting recipes accompanied by vividly elaborate photographs, everything changed.

Her website and blog (thepioneerwoman.com) is still going strong these days, and so is “The Pioneer Woman” on Food Network. The Christmas season is in full swing on Drummond’s ranch, and in the Saturday, Dec. 23, episode, she’s baking up some tasty treats that are great at any time of the year: cookies!

That’s right, it’s cookie day on the ranch, and Drummond’s baking a sweet foursome of treats that are as perfect for sharing with loved ones at Christmas as they are at any other time of the year. First up are chocolate mint iced cookies that she decorates with swirls of white-as-snow royal icing, followed by some sweet browned butter sugar cookies that she uses as a base for her decadent cookie jam pies.

The oven’s working overtime, though, with a third batch of cookies ready for their time in the heat, and these ones — chocolate chip cookies with bacon and caramel corn — take decadent to a whole new level. Finally, Drummond gives the oven a break for her final batch, some nobake cookies that she makes with seeds, grains, nuts and fruits.

That’s a lot of cookies for just one family, but Drummond, as always, has the answer. She packs them up (while saving some for herself, of course) into cute little cookie collections for her kids to deliver to their friends and family, and who wouldn’t be happy about receiving a gift like that?

Home on the range isn’t just about riding horses and herding cattle, and Ree Drummond loves sharing the lifestyle with people near and far. New episodes of “The Pioneer Woman” air Saturday mornings on Food Network.
