Warming center to open Monday
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 228 Spring St., will open a warming center Monday through Thursday.
The National Weather Service predicts low temperatures of 19 degrees on Monday, 16 degrees on Tuesday and 21 degrees Wednesday.
The Rev. C.B. Baker of St. Luke’s said the church decided to make the call Friday giving
time for people in the community to plan accordingly.
“It’s going to be pretty darn cold,” he said. “It all could change, but we’re going to be open.”
The Community Services Office, 600 W. Grand Ave., will start taking applications for the Winter Regular and Crisis Home Energy Assistance Program on Tuesday.
Applications will be taken from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, through March. Winter crisis program applicants must have a shut-off notice.
Applications for potential eligible senior citizens and disabled households have been mailed. Current CenterPoint Energy and Entergy bills must be submitted with applications. All applicants are required to have both bills before their application can be processed.
Applicants must bring photo ID and proof of income from previous month. Income sources include wages and salaries for all working-age adults living in the household, SSI, SSA, retirement and veteran’s benefits, unemployment, workers’ compensation, pensions and annuities, foster care payments, contributions, child support payments, self-employment income and HUD utility payments.
