Bratton leads NPC women in first year

National Park College’s women’s basketball team ended its first regular season on Feb. 24 with a home loss to Arkansas State University Mid-South from West Memphis.

The Nighthawks began the season with a 75-68 victory at the NPC Wellness Center in November and lost to St. Louis Community College in Mid-South’s Greyhound Tipoff Classic, but did not play again until the spring semester. They lost once in January and three times in February.

Faith Bratton, a graduate of Jessievill­e, led the team in scoring with 20.8 points per game. She also led the team in rebounding and assists.

Kayla Sims, of Fountain Lake, averaged nine points in the team’s six games. Point guard Bailey Womack, also of Fountain Lake, averaged 14.2 points in five of the six games.

The team also included Lake Hamilton’s Anna Ledbetter and Mountain Pine’s Brooke Meeks.

Three transfers joined the team at the semester. Guard Haley Ortiz, of Caddo Hills, averaged two points and 3.4 assists in the five games.

Laney Wallace transferre­d from College of the Ouachitas in Malvern, and averaged 4.4 points. Shawnee Shepherd, of Bismarck, also joined the team.

The Nighthawks will travel to compete in the National Intramural-Recreation­al Sports Associatio­n Collegiate Club Regionals later this month.
