Arkansas to celebrate Archeology Month
FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas’ Archeology Month, an annual celebration of Arkansas’ prehistoric and historic past, will be held the month of March. Co-sponsored by the Arkansas Archeological Survey and the Arkansas Archeological Society, Archeology Month will be celebrated at museums, libraries, parks and other venues throughout the state.
With a general theme of “Celebrate Archeology,” the activities explore features of Native American and pioneer life. Some 41 activities — including exhibits, slide shows, workshops, demonstrations and open houses — will be held at 32 different venues. Most of the activities are free and open to the public.
Area activities include: “Archeology in the Hot Springs Area” throughout the month at Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern. Ave., sponsored by the Ouachita Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society. A display on the archeology in and around Hot Springs will be featured. For information, call 623-4161.
At noon Tuesday, Clark County Historical Association will sponsor the program “Archeological and Historical Investigations at Downtown Hollywood” at Western Sizzlin’, Malone Drive and Interstate 30, Arkadelphia. Meeks Etchieson, who is retired from the Ouachita National Forest, will present information from a recent archeological study in the Hollywood Community. Artifacts from the area will be displayed. At 7 p.m. March 13, there will be a program on “Arkansas’ Contribution to the Paleoindian Database of the Americas” in the Fordyce Room at National Park Medical Center, 1910 Malvern Ave. Julie Morrow, of Arkansas Archeological Survey - ASU Research Station, will give a program on Arkansas’ earliest communities. She has recorded Paleoindian and Dalton points found across the state.
