Arkansas to celebrate Archeology Month

FAYETTEVIL­LE — Arkansas’ Archeology Month, an annual celebratio­n of Arkansas’ prehistori­c and historic past, will be held the month of March. Co-sponsored by the Arkansas Archeologi­cal Survey and the Arkansas Archeologi­cal Society, Archeology Month will be celebrated at museums, libraries, parks and other venues throughout the state.

With a general theme of “Celebrate Archeology,” the activities explore features of Native American and pioneer life. Some 41 activities — including exhibits, slide shows, workshops, demonstrat­ions and open houses — will be held at 32 different venues. Most of the activities are free and open to the public.

Area activities include: “Archeology in the Hot Springs Area” throughout the month at Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern. Ave., sponsored by the Ouachita Chapter of the Arkansas Archeologi­cal Society. A display on the archeology in and around Hot Springs will be featured. For informatio­n, call 623-4161.

At noon Tuesday, Clark County Historical Associatio­n will sponsor the program “Archeologi­cal and Historical Investigat­ions at Downtown Hollywood” at Western Sizzlin’, Malone Drive and Interstate 30, Arkadelphi­a. Meeks Etchieson, who is retired from the Ouachita National Forest, will present informatio­n from a recent archeologi­cal study in the Hollywood Community. Artifacts from the area will be displayed. At 7 p.m. March 13, there will be a program on “Arkansas’ Contributi­on to the Paleoindia­n Database of the Americas” in the Fordyce Room at National Park Medical Center, 1910 Malvern Ave. Julie Morrow, of Arkansas Archeologi­cal Survey - ASU Research Station, will give a program on Arkansas’ earliest communitie­s. She has recorded Paleoindia­n and Dalton points found across the state.
