A lack of knowledge

-

Dear editor:

As I grow older, I have much more time to read and watch some interesting programs on TV. For instance, there is a great program on the science channel titled “How the Universe Works.” There are discussions of the solar system, black holes, singularities, and other mysterious elements of the universe. Discussions by very intelligent scientists on these topics and others. It is clear that there is far more that we do not know than we know. When we can admit a lack of knowledge, we become open to new ideas and perhaps a new perspective.

I consider one of our biggest problems those who are positive they know the truth and no one can tell them otherwise. They are convinced that there was once was a dark-skinned little man from a little spot in the desert that had the answer to everything, but they do not even depict him as he was or even know what he said. They insist on describing him as a blond-haired blue-eyed white man, misquoting him (they really have no idea of what he actually said) and keep getting the legend wrong.

There have been many religious figures in history and virtually all of them were certain they had the answers. Unfortunately, their answers were and are flawed. Billy Graham was a very skilled orator, but he was basically also a very skilled con artist. Unfortunately, there are way too many that follow in his footsteps. Their efforts to take away my freedoms terrify me. Some of the meanest letters written to this paper are written by those who call themselves “Christian.”

I, for one, am still trying to understand the universe and how we got here. I am not afraid to acknowledge that I do not know the answers.

In the end — only kindness matters. Mike Nunn Hot Springs
