Village Walk for Cancer committee begins work

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Village WFCR is in its

17th year and continues to draw more and more sponsors, donors and walkers each year. Melanie Pederson, chair, said in the press release that “We couldn’t do it without them. Our goal this year is to raise $50,000 in cash donations and to register 500 walkers.”

Donna Aylward, co-chair, said, “All of the money we raise for cancer research stays in Arkansas and will be designated for the Seeds of Science Program.” The kick-off meeting was held at UAMS where Dr. Aimee Franco, a two-time Seeds of Science grant recipient, shared her research on thyroid cancer.

The 17th Annual Village Walk for Cancer Research starts at

7:30 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Balboa Pavilion in Hot Springs Village. There will be food and music, along with a bake sale and silent auction. Dr. Peter Emanuel, director of the Cancer Institute, will provide an update on the latest research findings. Franco will be there with her team as well as other UAMS staff.

To raise awareness for research grants, UAMS and the WFCR planning team will have Franco as the guest speaker for the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17 “The Doctor in the Village” event to be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ Catholic Church, 295 Balearic Road, Hot Springs Village. Attendees will get a free lunch, compliment­s of Envoys and Arvest Bank, while Franco shares her story about cancer research at UAMS and the need for the Seeds of Science grant program. There will be will be time for questions and answers. Please plan on being a part of this informativ­e and interactiv­e event to learn more about why we walk and raise money for cancer research.

All Village WFCR committee meetings are held from 10 a.m. to noon on the third Thursday of each month at Village Church of Christ. The public is welcome. “We are looking for people who are interested in making a difference by helping us help others,” Pederson said.
