Author to speak at HSV Wine and Cheese event

-

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Friends of the Coronado Center Library continues its “Wine and Cheese with the Author” series at

3 p.m. Thursday with Hot Springs Village author Kathy Sanders.

Sanders lost her two grandsons, Chase and Colton Smith, in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City. She has spent the years since investigating the horrific incident and struggling to cope with grief and issues of faith.

Sanders’ first book, “After Oklahoma City,” published

10 years after the bombing, recounts her investigation and first attempts to come to terms with her grief and anger. Her search for answers eventually led her to develop relationships with the families of Terry Nichols and Timothy McVeigh, the convicted bombers, and started her on the road to forgiveness.

McVeigh was executed for his crimes in 2001, and Nichols is in a super max prison in Colorado, serving eight life terms for the deaths of federal agents and 161 life terms for the rest of the murders.

Sanders formed a friendship with Nichols via phone conversations, letters and face-to-face meetings, and wrote about the process of forgiveness in her second book, “Now You See Me,” published in 2014. She has shared her story across the nation on television and radio, and has spoken to many groups in Hot Springs Village and around the country.

The event is open to members and guests. Admission is free.
