Lies and misinformation

-

Dear editor:

There is a great quote by Issac Asimov, “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’” It appears that when we have a person with no moral character leading our nation, his followers do not seem to mind and they will excuse his behavior no matter how immoral, mean and nasty it is. For some of them, it appears that they feel it gives them permission to be equally mean and nasty.

Following is from an article by Michael Gerson:

“At its best, faith is the overflow of gratitude, the attempt to live as if we are loved, the fragile hope for something better on the other side of pain and death. And this feather of grace weighs more in the balance than any political gain.”

If a Christian abides by that doctrine, I have no problems. Whether or not I may share their belief is of no consequence, for I know that they will treat me with kindness and respect my journey through the wilderness of the universe.

If, however, we have people who maliciously make up stories with no knowledge of facts and are willing to present false and misleading information, then I do have a problem. As long as people tolerate false information and honor ignorance, we, as a community and nation, are in trouble. Mike Nunn Hot Springs
