HSC Master Gardeners host plant sale Saturday

MALVERN — Members of Hot Spring County Master Gardeners will hold a plant sale, “From Our Garden to Yours,” from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Hot Spring County Fairgrounds. It will feature an array of shrubs, perennials, herbs, vegetables, hanging baskets and bedding annuals grown by HSCMG members and their neighbors. New for 2018 will be an array of decorative pots and garden ornaments created by members. All plants will be labeled with use and cultural information.

According to President Pat Treadway in the release, the plants are adapted to local growing conditions. “They are truly from our garden to yours, just as the name of the show indicates. The plants thinned from local gardens are those that thrived so well that they grew beyond their space. The plants grown from cuttings and seeds in local greenhouses were selected specifically for their ability to survive in Hot Spring County.” Member growers have researched the best varieties for the area, and are being guided by performance data made available by Janet Carson of the U of A Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service; DeGray Lodge horticulturist Randy Heard; and Bob Buyers, director of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden.

“Another great thing about the sale,” according to Treadway, “is that we keep prices so low. Our goal in hosting the sale is not just to raise funds, but also to beautify our county by encouraging residents to plant gardens, and to extend horticultural information about how to grow those plants well.”
