A Hot Springs man was charged with multiple felonies Tuesday after he was allegedly found in possession of meth and other drugs after trying to flee from police officers who were checking on a report of a man staggering down a sidewalk.

William Garrett Grimwood,

30, who lists a Potter Street address, was taken into custody around

12:30 p.m. and charged with felony counts of possession of meth with purpose to deliver, punishable by up to 30 years in prison, possession of a Schedule III substance with purpose to deliver, punishable by up to

10 years, possession of a Schedule IV substance with purpose to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia, each punishable by up to six years, and misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

Grimwood remained in custody at the Garland County Detention Center on Wednesday in lieu of bonds totaling $20,250 and was set to appear Friday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Hot Springs police officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Central Avenue in reference to a man in a green shirt wearing a backpack who was reportedly staggering down the sidewalk.

Lt. Larry Patrick located a white male who matched the description passed out on the sidewalk in that area.

After Hot Springs police officers woke him up, the man, identified as Grimwood, reportedly stated he was just sleeping. Patrick noted his pupils were very small, which he claimed was due to his medication. A computer check showed Grimwood to be a parolee with a search waiver on file.

Officer Shane Lewis arrived at the scene, and the officers asked Grimwood to remove his belongings from his pockets. He allegedly admitted he had a bag of marijuana and began to remove items from his pants pockets, including a spoon which he stated was from breakfast, a syringe, lighters and a small baggie of what later tested positive for marijuana.

When officers asked about the contents of his backpack, Grimwood reportedly stated he didn’t know what was inside because his girlfriend had packed it for him. He said he had seen her put clothing inside the backpack, but he hadn’t
