Cleveland Arms nominated to Register

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The State Review Board of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program has recommended 18 Arkansas properties in 13 counties for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, including Cleveland Arms, 2410 Central Ave., in Hot Springs.

The review board, which met Wednesday in Little Rock, also listed the Dierks Lumber Co. Building, 308 Fourth St., in Mountain Pine, on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places. The board said nonhistoric alterations precluded it being listed on the National Register.

“The Cleveland Arms Apartment building remains as an intact example of a post-World War II short-and-long-term apartment building built with Federal Housing Authority funding,” according to the National Register nomination. “The structure has minimal changes and retains a considerable amount of integrity. The building provides a significant contribution to the area’s architectural history and insight to the returning veteran’s lifestyle.”

The 1927 Dierks Lumber and Coal Company Office was “one of the earliest buildings constructed by the lumber company as they developed the site of the adjacent mill and the surrounding residential areas,” according to the Arkansas Register nomination.

“The building was completed and in use by 1927 as the company’s community office. The office building was constructed to serve as office space for the Dierks Lumber and Coal Company as well as the real estate office for the various company-owned homes throughout the community.”

Other properties recommended for nomination to the National Register are Mosaic Templars State Temple and Fulk-Arkansas Democrat Building at Little Rock and the Carmichael House in the Landmark community in Pulaski County; Goodwin Field Administration Building at El Dorado in Union County; Washington Street Historic District Boundary Increase at Camden in Ouachita County; Schumaker Naval Ammunition Depot Barracks Buildings and Schumaker Naval Ammunition Depot Administration Building at East Camden in Calhoun County; Mount Salem Church and School near Paris in Logan County; C.A. Stuck and Sons Lumber Office Building at Jonesboro in Craighead County; Nevada County Courthouse at Prescott in Nevada County; Lockesburg Gymnasium at Lockesburg in Sevier County; Eureka Springs Cemetery at Eureka Springs in Carroll County; Carpenter Building at Gentry in Benton County; Deepwood House at Fayetteville in Washington County; Prairie Grove Commercial Historic District and North Mock Street Commercial Historic District at Prairie Grove in Washington County, and Farm No. 266 (Johnny Cash Boyhood Home) at Dyess in Mississippi County.
