Wolves wreak havoc on Scrapper Relay records

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

NASHVILLE — Six records were set in Nashville’s Scrapper Relays on Thursday, with Lake Hamilton athletes responsible for four of the new marks.

The Wolves were the top dogs in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions.

Lake Hamilton’s Colby Swecker helped take down a pair of records which stood for a combined

75 years. His time of 1:57.83 in the

800-meter run was the best in the state so far this season, according to Lake Hamilton coach Karl Koonce, and broke the Scrapper record of 2:00.00 set in 1965 by Stamps Roper. Skylar Davis followed his teammate in second place.

Swecker also ran on the record-breaking 4x400-meter relay team with Jackson Galster, Knowledge Hood and Cody Weldon. Their time of 3:25.48 narrowly broke a 1996 mark set by athletes from Prescott.

Josie Carson also celebrated in style after signing with the University of Arkansas on Tuesday. Carson’s time of 5:28.42 broke the Scrapper Relays record in the 1600-meter run by more than nine seconds. The previous record was set by another Lake Hamilton runner in 1993.

Carson ran a first-place time of 2:26.59 in the 800-meter run, just six seconds off the record time set in 1980. She also ran on Lake Hamilton’s third-place

4x400-meter relay team. Teammate Morgan Pruitt ran second to Carson in both the

800-meter and the 1600-meter events. She also joined Carson, Baylee Jenkins and Kiara Willis on the 4x400 team.

Edie Murray broke the meet record of 12-0 in the pole vault set in 2003 by an athlete from Mount Ida. Murray’s final eight was 13-1. She was followed in second place by teammate Grace Cole.

The Lady Wolves swept the top two places in a fourth event, the 3200-meter run. Anacaron Ramos took first place and Anna Cole placed second.

The team placed first in the meet with 116 points in the girls’ rankings. Texarkana placed second at 111 and Magnolia had 110 points.

The Wolves also swept the top two places in the boys’ pole vault. Haze Farmer took first place with Michael Harris placing second.

Omar Ramos and Noah Smith took the top two places for Lake Hamilton in the 3200-meter run, Hood gave the team firstplace points in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash events, and William Burgess won his second consecutive shot put competition after returning from surgery to repair an injury. Swecker, Davis, Weldon and Stephens also took first place in the 4x800-meter relay.

Lake Hamilton had a more comfortable margin in the boys’ team rankings with 135 points. Texarkana placed second with 104 points and Magnolia finished with 97.

Lakeside’s best finish in the meet was a third-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay with Tazz Glover, Dylan Nguyen, Jesus Damian and Eayn Shelley. Gideon Drake gave the Rams their best individual finish with fifth place in the 1600-meter run, while Taylor Gilham placed in the top eight of the high jump, long jump and the triple jump.

Emily Milbourn ran fourth in the girls 1600-meter run for the Lady Rams’ best result of the meet. Teammate Jessica Jennings ran sixth in the same event.
