A Hot Springs Village man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly choking and threatening his girlfriend with a knife.

Paul Gerard Hoedemaker, 47, who lists a Dulzura Lane address, was taken into custody at around 5 p.m. Wednesday and charged with felony counts of second-degree domestic battery, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and aggravated assault on a family or household member, punishable by up to six years.

Hoedemaker remained in custody Thursday on zero bond and is set to appear Monday in Garland County District Court.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Hot Springs Village Police Officer Heidi Bernard was dispatched to a residence on Dulzura Lane in reference to a disturbance after a woman reported that her live-in boyfriend, identified as Hoedemaker, had choked her and held a knife to her throat.

The woman told Bernard and Sgt. Jason Graves that Hoedemaker had left the residence. She said he had been drinking earlier and was upset and the two argued. She alleged he grabbed her by the neck and began choking her and then pulled out a brown and gold knife.

Bernard observed red markings around her neck where she said he choked her. She said he choked her with one hand while holding the knife to her neck with the other.

She told police Hoedemaker went to her ex-husband’s residence on Gava Lane. Officers made contact with Hoedemaker at the Gava Lane residence and advised him to keep his hands in sight when he reportedly attempted to put his hands in his pockets.

After cuffing Hoedemaker, officers located a brown knife with gold trim in his possession. He reportedly admitted to being at the Dulzura Lane residence, but told police “he didn’t lay hands” on his girlfriend.

Once at the detention center, Hoedemaker was reportedly uncooperative and refused to answer questions while being booked in.
