Ouachita Baptist University to host senior art exhibits

-

ARKADELPHIA — Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will host Morgan Cansler, Sarah Engebrecht and Tricia Griffin in their senior art exhibits.

Griffin will present her exhibit on the first floor Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery of Moses-Provine Hall Tuesday through May 3. Cansler and Engebrecht will present their work on the second floor Adams Gallery Tuesday through May 6.

Senior exhibits are presented by students of the visual arts department as a means of fulfilling degree requirements and displaying the work they have created during their time on campus.

“The senior exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for the visual arts students to display their creative works in one location,” Gary Gerber, dean of Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts, said. “These works have been assignments for classes, work projects for internships or requests by organizations at Ouachita or the community. They show the faculty, students and public their achievements and creativity while pursuing their visual arts degree.”

Griffin is a senior graphic design major from Carrollton, Texas. Her exhibit, titled “New File: Impact,” is focused on her goal of allowing her audience to step into her shoes and experience how Ouachita impacted her life.

“Every project begins by creating a new file. As more ideas evolve, layers are added and taken away,” Griffin said. “The process of creating art is an ever-changing and unpredictable one, and often times, it’s even more important than the finished product.”

Her show will feature pieces she created throughout her time at Ouachita, including drawings, logos, book covers, magazine covers and other projects. Griffin’s reception will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the first floor Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery.

Cansler is a senior graphic design major from Donaldson. Cansler’s show will be paired with Engebrecht’s and will feature work from her time on campus, including magazine covers, posters and photographs.

“I have always been inspired by Walt Disney’s famous quote, ‘It all started with a mouse,’” Cansler said. “My style is considered simple and clean. As I go on, I hope to build on that.”

Engebrecht is a senior graphic design major from Morrilton. Her show will embody the random inspirations and ideas life brings, including pieces such as paintings, logos, posters and pixel art. Also featured are her blue ink drawings.

“Look around you at literally everything, because you don’t know where your next bit of inspiration will come from,” Engebrecht said. “Anything I make comes from an idea that pops up out of nowhere and hits me in the face screaming, ‘Notice me; I’m perfect!’”

Cansler and Engebrecht will host their reception in the second floor of Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery, April 27 at 7 p.m. All receptions are free and open to the public.

The exhibits can be viewed during regular Adams Gallery hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. Call OBU’s School of Fine Arts at 870-245-5129 for more information.
