Day of Prayer

-

Dear editor:

This letter was written on Thursday, May 3, which was “The National Day of Prayer.” I was reminded of this being a special day while listening to the Christian radio station K-LOVE (90.1 FM)

when walking my dogs.

The hosts each told what they would pray for. One said they would pray that our country be more united instead of so divided. Another said they would pray for our nation to be healed from our turmoil. The last one said their prayer would be that we would become much more like that “one nation under God,” as we speak of in the Pledge of Allegiance.

“Many Americans have long taken pride in the nation’s being founded on devotion to the God of the Bible. Yet many now claim America’s Christian heritage is a myth. This is false, as we will see” (The Good News magazine, July/August 2011).

It is not surprising that many in the younger generations don’t know that America has a strong Christian heritage, since they have textbooks that have edited all that out and many liberal teachers and professors are no help, either.

“Public schools and most colleges have been controlled by the left for many generations. … What is behind this great divide in the nation? At the root of the conflict is a war of world views, between one that is Christian and one that is humanistic. …

“Law, from a Christian perspective and as the founders of America viewed it, originates in the will of God, revealed in general to man through nature and his conscience and more specifically in the revelation of the Scriptures. Law from a humanistic view is rooted in man. …

“To the humanist there is no higher being than man. There is no incarnate Savior. … Having no other means of provision, of salvation, or of peace, humanistic man attempts to regulate and provide all things through government and law.

“… government becomes the savior in a humanistic society” (afa Journal, American Family Association, May 2017, page 19).

“The progressive (liberal) movement is out to destroy our country as it has existed” (afa Journal, October 2014, page 27). This article stated that this is what Obama meant when he said that he wanted to “fundamentally transform America.” It also described the liberal and ungodly platform of the modern-day Democratic Party!

“Author Peter Lillback notes that early America was overwhelmingly Christian: ‘At the beginning of the American Revolution, 98.4 percent of the Americans claimed to be Protestant; 1.4 percent claim to be Roman Catholic — thus 99.8 percent were professing Christians.”

“In 1831 the notable French historian Alexis de Tocqueville visited America and made a profound observation about the source of America’s strength and character. He concluded that it was attributed to America’s commitment to religion — and specifically to Christianity” (The Good News magazine, July/August 2011).

Truly, we who are already Christians should pray that we would become more like “one nation under God.” Lloyd Hoffman Hot Springs
