‘For’ the LS millage

-

Dear editor:

Early voting began today and I would like to encourage everyone to vote for the Lakeside millage. Lakeside is asking for a millage this year that will allow them to upgrade the school in many ways.

Our school has grown significantly in the last 10 years and we are just running out of space for the children to be educated, fed and cared for in a safe and systematic order. The new millage will allow the school district to build a much needed junior high that will allow seventh- and eighth-grade students to be housed together. Currently, the eighthgrade students are placed in the building with the high school students, which creates concerns on many levels.

Another benefit of this much-needed millage is to improve the current cafeteria in several of the buildings. As the school continues to grow, the projection will be to start the lunch rotation at 10:30 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. That is a huge disadvantage to many students as they try to start or finish their studies distracted by hunger.

Most importantly, the new millage for Lakeside School District will allow the school to upgrade its safety features. Unfortunately, in this modern era, schools have to place priority on keeping children safe from mass shooting or bombing situations. The new millage will allow Lakeside to upgrade the safety features at each building, including safety glass, new entrances, enclosed walkways and other technological upgrades.

This year the millage will be included in the primary election, so every vote counts! Please support the millage for Lakeside School District for the safety of our children in Garland County. Virginia Fortner Mother of Lakeside students
