Reddie women, men compete in first day of NCAA regional

Henderson State’s women’s golf team earned fifth place after the first day of the 2018 NCAA Division II Women’s Central Golf Regional, while the men were 13th in their regional tournament.

The women’s team began its search for a second straight berth in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championsh­ips with a team total of 306, 18 under par, in round one of the Central Regional tournament Monday in St. Charles, Mo. The tournament is hosted by Lindenwood University at the Missouri Buffs Golf Club.

The top three schools in the 12-team field at the conclusion of the 54-hole tournament will advance to national tournament. Henderson ended the first day two strokes back of third place and five back of first.

Three Reddies were among the top

20 individual scores. The team was led by junior Hanna Brauburger, from Bentonvill­e, who shot a 3-over-par 75 to finish in a tie for 16th overall. She had three birdies on Monday.

Both senior Sarah Wright, of Fayettevil­le, and junior Luisa Gartmann, from Hannover, Germany, carded scores of

4-over-par 76 in round one. The two teammates are tied for 19th individual­ly and each had two birdies in their opening round.

Great American Conference champion Arkansas Tech leads the field after the first round with a team score of

13-over-par 301.

Henderson sophomore Taylor Loeb, out of Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock, teed off first for the Reddies on Tuesday. Senior Allison Davis, of Silsbee, Texas, and their teammates followed 10 minutes after one another to start the second round.

The men’s golf team shot a 12-overpar 300 on Monday morning to settle into a tie for 13th place after the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Midwest Regional in Findlay, Ohio. The tournament is being held at the Findlay Country Club.

The Reddies are nine strokes back of the top five teams. The top five schools at the conclusion of the 54-hole tournament will advance to the 2018 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championsh­ip at the Shoals Golf Club in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

Junior Cameron McRae, of Lakeside, led Henderson in round one. McRae shot 1-under-par 71 for the day and had four birdies on his scorecard to end the opening round tied for 10th place overall.

Junior, Kevin Boutier, from Montrouge, France, was the next-best Reddie in the first round, as he carded a 3-overpar 75 to put himself in a tie for 43rd. Boutier had three birdies and produced the only eagle for Henderson on the day at hole No. 15.

Tiffin University led the 20-team field after posting a score of 7-under-par

281 on Monday.

Freshman Trey DePriest, a graduate of Buffalo Island Central High School in Monette, teed off first for Henderson Tuesday morning. McRae, Boutier and fellow teammates sophomore Nick Shapiro, out of Plano West High School in Texas, and freshman Mitchell Ford, out of Little Rock Catholic, followed in

10-minute intervals.
