Music festival to kick off with Opening Fanfare, mentor showcase
The Hot Springs Music Festival will begin its 23rd season with the traditional Opening Fanfare at 6:45 p.m. Sunday inside the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa.
The audience can look forward to hearing Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and John Philip Sousa’s “Liberty Bell March,” among other exciting brass and percussion pieces. James Decker, low brass mentor for the Hot Springs Music Festival, is the conductor. There is no charge for admission.
Following the fanfare, those gathered will have the first opportunity to hear the Lumos Wind Quintet, from Birmingham, England. They are the Festival Outreach Ensemble and will perform until the mentor showcase begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Crystal Ballroom of the Arlington Hotel. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door, along with festival passes.
Featured performers at the mentor showcase include Deborah Fleisher, harp mentor, who will play solo works by Debussy arranged for harp, and Matt McClung, percussion mentor, who will perform a solo percussion work titled “Warm It Up,” written for him in 2002 by Thomas Osborne. The Salt Lake Tribune said in a news release, “Osborne’s surprisingly melodic use of a relatively small drum kit, and the exhilarating athleticism of Matthew McClung’s performance made ‘Warm It Up’ the biggest crowd-pleaser of this musically rewarding afternoon.”
