Students named U of A Honors College fellows

FAYETTEVIL­LE — Two Hot Springs area graduates were awarded fellowship­s from the University of Arkansas Honors College.

Luke Long and Michala Smith are among the 88 high school students to be awarded these fellowship­s. They are both scheduled to enroll at the U of A in the fall 2018 semester.

Long is a recent graduate of Lakeside High School and will be majoring in physics. He is the son of Molly and Richard Long, of Hot Springs.

Smith is a recent graduate of Lake Hamilton High School and will be majoring in engineerin­g. She is the daughter of Mike and Jacklyn Smith, of Hot Springs.

The Honors College Fellowship is a $70,000 award over four years that largely covers a student’s tuition, room and board, and registrati­on and books. Qualifying students must score at least a 32 on the ACT and have a minimum 3.8 grade point average, and the selection process involves a writing test and campus interview.

To qualify for the fellowship a student must score at least a

3.8 grade point average and show evidence of intellectu­al curiosity, leadership potential and community involvemen­t. The selection process also involves a writing test and campus interview for finalists.

The Honors College Fellowship­s are made possible by a portion of the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation’s

$300 million gift to the university in 2002.
