HSSD to host reception with new coaches

The Hot Springs School District will host a reception Monday at the Jones School Historic Building to welcome its new head coaches in football, basketball and baseball.

The reception is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Those in attendance are scheduled to include Darrell Burnett, Antoni Lasker and Justin McArthur, all recently hired as next year’s head coaches in football, basketball and baseball, respective­ly, at Hot Springs World Class High School.

Burnett was hired from Bryant, where he was the defensive coordinato­r, to replace Chris Vereen, who resigned in May to accept the head coaching position at Star City. Burnett has a 5917 record as a defensive coordinato­r at Camden Fairview, Malvern and Bryant.

Assistant boys’ basketball coach Lasker was promoted to head coach after Rodney Echols accepted the athletic director position with the district. Former athletic director Tony Hines accepted a position as assistant principal at the Hot Springs Junior Academy middle school. The Trojans have made the Class 5A state basketball semifinals for four consecutiv­e years.

YMCA to host pickleball clinics

The Hot Springs Family YMCA will host pickleball clinics the next three Thursdays.

Attendance is free for all members and non-members ages 10 and older, according to program director Alexandria West.

The clinics will be held Thursday, July 19 and July 26.

Registrati­on open for Adam Brown Road Mile at LHHS

The 33rd annual Adam Brown Road Mile is scheduled for Aug. 25 at Lake Hamilton High School.

The race was formerly known as the Owens Road Mile. The event will be held at Lake Hamilton High School for the ninth time.

The divisions include Open Male, for those ages 16 and older; Open Female, for those ages 16 and older; Masters Male, 40 and older; Masters Female, 40 and older; Senior Boys, high school grades 10-12; Senior Girls, high school grades

10-12, Junior Boys, ages 15 and younger; Junior Girls, ages 15 and younger; and Kids, ages 12 and younger.

Races will begin at seven times: 8 a.m., Open Male and Open Female; 8:20 a.m., Masters Male and Masters Female; 8:40 a.m., Senior Boys; 9 a.m.; Senior Girls; 9:20 a.m., Junior Boys; 9:40 a.m., Junior Girls; and 10 a.m., the Kids half-mile run.

Local teams schedule two 7-on-7 tourneys

Fountain Lake and Lake Hamilton will host summer 7-on-7 football tournament­s this week.

The Cobras added an event on Monday at 6 p.m. They will host Cutter Morning Star and Jessievill­e.

The second annual Live Like Bryce Foundation tournament will be held at Lake Hamilton’s Wolf Stadium Friday at 8 a.m. The tournament is one of two main fundraiser­s for the organizati­on, which awards scholarshi­ps and addresses other community needs with the proceeds.

Hot Springs and Fountain Lake are among eight teams scheduled to participat­e. Other teams include Benton, Mena, Nashville, Mineral Springs and Poyen.

College athletics clearingho­use meeting to be held at Lakeside

An NCAA athletic clearingho­use informatio­nal meeting for profession­al developmen­t and a parent meeting will be held in Lakeside High School’s auditorium on July 23.

University of Central Arkansas’ Natalie Shock, associate athletics director for compliance, will be the presenter.

The informatio­n meeting is open to all Garland County coaches, administra­tors and school counselors. The first meeting is scheduled for 3:30–5 p.m.

A parent meeting open to all parents in the area is scheduled for 6–7:30 p.m. Informatio­n to be presented is meant to benefit the parents of athletes of all ages, no matter what grade level, for anyone interested in playing athletics in college.

Topics will include eligibilit­y issues, academic requiremen­ts for NCAA divisions, ACT informatio­n, comparison of full qualifiers to partial and non-qualifiers, grade point average calculatio­ns and class needs.
