DAC donates books to National Library
Lisa Winkleman, Chapter president of the Lt. Samuel Cherry Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists, recently announced the donation of five volumes of “Mayflower Families through Five Generations: Descendants of the Pilgrims who Landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, December 1620,” to the National Society DAC Genealogical Library in Washington, D.C. These volumes will be an addition to the library whose holdings are specific to the Colonial Period.
The volumes concentrate on the five generation descendants of Mayflower passengers: John Howard, James Chilton, Richard More, Samuel Fuller, Peter Brown, John Alden and Thomas Rogers.
Washington, D.C., is a treasure trove for researching genealogists with libraries housed in the headquarters of several lineage societies including: the Society of the Cincinnati, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames 17th Century, the United States Daughters of
1812 and DAC. These libraries join the National Archives, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Libraries making Washington D.C. a “mecca” for research.
Winkleman, who was elected in February, has moved the chapter forward with several projects, including support of Service Dogs of Distinction, an all-volunteer organization that provides service dogs to veterans for free; the historical marker placement at Pound Cemetery in Danville; and the awarding of 11 JROTC medals to worthy high school cadets. These projects fulfill the objects of the national society which are patriotic, historical and educational: to research the history and deeds of the American colonists, and to record and publish them; to commemorate deeds of colonial interest; to inculcate and foster love of the United States of America and its institutions by all its residents; and to obey its laws and venerate its flag, the emblem of its power and civic righteousness.
