The Sentinel-Record

Who serves; who doesn’t

- L.J. Gibson Hot Springs

Dear editor:

The last few days many of the “Viewpoints” have been about the service records of individuals from both parties of our government. President Trump didn’t serve in Vietnam, President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, etc., might I add a sore spot to my own personal situation concerning elected officials. I was against Hillary Clinton for a statement she made the very first time she ran for office concerning our military, “we didn’t send our best.” Yes, we did, and they are the ones still serving around the world today. It doesn’t matter if it is my family member or yours, these brave men and women are our best. And I thank them from the bottom to the top of my heart, and I pray for them.

We keep seeing the corruption of elected officials, city to Washington, over and over in the news. Let’s remind our up and coming leaders of tomorrow, it does matter what you do today, because someone is always watching your actions. Look at all the news about misappropriate behavior of not only our elected officials but all these movie and rock stars that the people look up to. I personally don’t want to hear about actions of misbehavior that you wouldn’t complain about 10 or more years ago. I’m not interested in how someone’s poor judgment many years ago makes them a wrong choice today, only if that behavior changed. If you don’t walk in the other person’s shoes, you don’t know the options they had at the time.

I am of the belief that like our Founding Fathers, we all have a skeleton or two in the closet we wouldn’t want out in the public eye. In reading about the history of our nation and its beginning, it is clear to me that all of us fall short somewhere. If you want to be famous or in the history books, do your best to live a good life, be kind to others and if you make a mistake, be willing to learn from it and admit your fault.
