Focus on student success, safety

FOUNTAIN LAKE — The 2018-19 school year will see a continued focus on student support, student safety, and student success throughout the Fountain Lake School District.

In an effort to live out the district’s vision of partnering with the community to inspire, motivate, and prepare every student to be a confident, productive, knowledgeable, goal-oriented citizen, Fountain Lake Superintendent Dr. Michael Murphy, along with the district board of education and staff, are developing a kindergarten through 12th grade Literacy Plan that will focus on the needs of the individual student.

“Each student is at a different place in their path to being a lifelong learner. Identifying a student’s strengths and interests and building on those allows us as a district to support each student exactly where they need that support,” Murphy said.

For the 2018-19 school year, Fountain Lake’s school day schedule will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. four days per week. Again this year, the district will utilize an early release schedule on Wednesdays to allow teachers to examine student data and collaborate to improve teaching and learning.

Visitors to the campus will note that security efforts have increased. All visitors must have identification and be logged in on the campus before entering student areas.

Changes in the cafeteria will increase student options and are expected to increase the number of students dining on the campus. Upper-level students will have access to an additional “Grab and Go” location for a quicker lunch option.

The teaching staff in each of the district’s buildings continues to undertake efforts to address the individual student. Elementary and middle school teachers will begin implementation of the state’s R.I.S.E. (Reading Initiative for Student Excellence), while Project Based Learning will continue to be a focus in the middle and high school.

“With the start of a new school year, an excitement begins to grow. Our student-athletes, spirit groups, and musicians are on and off our campus all summer preparing for the new year. Our teachers seem to be here all of the time, getting ready for the new year. There is really nothing better than that excitement that peaks on that fresh, new first day of school, “said Murphy. “There is no place that I would rather be than at Fountain Lake on Aug. 13, 2018, when the buses roll in and a new year begins!”
