HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Eddie Jean Devine, 80, of Hot Springs Village, went to be in God’s arms on July 27, 2018.

She was born June 8, 1938, in Hot Springs, to Ed and Lucy Staggs. Jean graduated from Hot Springs High School on May 25,

1956. She married the love of her life, James Patrick Devine. They opened Jim’s Liquor Store July

1, 1979. Later in life, Jean went to work for the State of Arkansas Revenue Department and retired after 16 years.

Jean adored being a swim team mom with her son, Jay, for 12 years. She was his No. 1 cheerleade­r. She looked forward to spending the weekends with a picnic lunch on the lake with Jimmy and Jay. She was a loving and inspiring grandmothe­r to both Cody and Kaleigh. Jean was an avid reader, world traveler and expert gardener. Jean enjoyed giving the “girls” a run for their money playing cards.

Loving survivors include son, Joseph Edward “Jay” Rhodes and his wife, Sharon; her beloved grandchild­ren, Cody Patrick Rhodes and Kaleigh Ann Rhodes.

Visitation was held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. today at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Father George Sanders will officiate.

David Loren Hartshorne was born Jan. 3, 1940, in Watts, Okla., to Allen and Eva (Wilkey) Hartshorne. He passed from this life Friday, July 27, 2018, at the age of 78.

He attended high school in Tulsa, Okla. Served in the Navy on the USS Magoffin at sea as an interior communicat­ions electricia­n and was honorably discharged in January 1964. He was a member of the IBEW Local 584 for more than 54 years and worked throughout the U.S. He also served as the union’s assistant business manager, assistant dispatcher and on the Apprentice­ship Committee.

David was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his three sons, Toni Colleen (Browning) Hartshorne; his brother, Larry Hartshorne; and his sister, Reba (Hartshorne) Haley.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Vonda (Allison) Hartshorne; sons, David Hartshorne Jr., Dean Hartshorne (Cristina), Dale Hartshorne (Sheri); stepchildr­en, Cheryl Hilser, Julie Byford (Joe), Kevin Harrison; sisters, Teresa Yarnell and Laura Hamilton; six grandchild­ren and eight great-grandchild­ren.

A celebratio­n of David’s life will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at IOOF (Hulbert) Cemetery in Hulburt, Okla.

Pennie L. Hembree, 63, of Hot Springs, Ark., passed from this life on July 28, 2018.

She was born on Sept. 22, 1954, in Clarksvill­e, Tenn., to James and Glenda Hembree. Pennie enjoyed going camping, fishing, rock digging and was a one-of-a-kind original hippie. She was married to Dean Materi for 20 years.

Pennie is survived by her daughter, Jessica Materi; four grandchild­ren, Kindall Johnson, Riley Johnson, Alex Johnson, Allison Johnson; mother, Glenda Hembree; three siblings, Tim Hembree (Joy), Keith Hembree (Janis), Richard Hembree; nieces and nephews, Missy Hembree, Shannon Venable, Chris Hembree, Michael Hembree; and a host of other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, James Hembree; one niece, Lucy Hembree; and one nephew, Bradley Hembree.

ROYAL — Anita B. Howell, age 84, of Royal, died Sunday, July 29, 2018.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1933, in Bear, the daughter of John Rubin Humphreys and Dera Virginia Goodwin Humphreys. On Oct. 1, 1966, she married James N. Howell, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Roy Humphreys and Robert Humphreys; one sister, Lois Hill; three brothers-in-law, Clyde Hill, Kenny Simpson and Walter Mayberry; and one sister-in-law, Ernestine Humphreys.

Anita was a member of Forest Hills Church of God and a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and singing.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Laura Howell, of Hot Springs, and David and Melissa Howell, of Royal; five grandchild­ren, Kirsten Howell, Alexander and Cheyenne Howell, Megan Howell, Nicholas Howell and Katherine Howell; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Sally Simpson, Freda and Vernon Davis, Nell Chambers and Ruth Mayberry, all of Royal; one sister-in-law, Louise Humphreys, of Illinois; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of wonderful friends.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Forest Hills Church of God with Brother Larry Mayberry officiatin­g.

Interment will be in Lowe Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Hot Springs.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearer­s will be Joel Davis, Chris Davis, Shannon Davis, Russell Hill, Jerry Hill, Dan Lawniczak and Mike Simpson.

W. Leo Johnson, 85, of Hot Springs, went to be with the Lord July 28, 2018.

He was born July 3, 1933, in Rock Springs, Ark., to Joe and Sarah Ethel (Merriott) Johnson.

Leo was a loving father, grandfathe­r, brother and friend to many. He worked as a carpenter until he retired. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting with his kids and grandkids. He was a member of Quarry Mountain Hunting Club. His favorite pastime was sitting on his front porch watching his chickens and goats graze. He was a longtime member and deacon of Millcreek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Vera Loveda Johnson; three brothers, Arthur Johnson, Ed Johnson and Austin Johnson; three sisters, Dorothy Herron, Eva Harper and Ivy Bates.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry (Cathy) Johnson and Larry (Martha) Johnson, all of Hot Springs; seven grandchild­ren, Renee (Dustin) Yeager, of Jacksonvil­le, T.J. (Kayla) Taylor, Erica (Daniel) Roberts, Matt Taylor, Kevin Johnson, Joshua Johnson and Kaylee Johnson, all of Hot Springs; seven great-grandchild­ren; and many nieces and nephews; special friend, Mary Jane Bates.

Brother Johnny Graves will officiate along with Brother Teddy Hill. Pallbearer­s will be T.J. Taylor, Billy Amos, Tod Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Dustin Yeager, J.J. Johnson, Joshua Johnson and Lawrence Ault.

Honorary pallbearer­s will be the deacons of Millcreek Baptist Church.

Clayton Wayne Rynders, 49, of Hot Springs, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018.

He was born Jan. 31, 1969, in Hot Springs, to Clyde Wayne and Dorthy Montgomery Rynders.

He was of Pentecosta­l faith. He was predecease­d by grandparen­ts, Jack and Ruby Montgomery and Jack and Bonnie Blythe; and one son, Bodie Rynders.

Survivors include his children, Clayton William (Laura) Rynders and Lindsey Beth Rynders; his parents, Clyde and Dorthy Rynders; one brother, Clyde James Rynders; two grandchild­ren; Damon Wayne O’Brien and Toby Bentley Rynders; many uncles, aunts and cousins.

A celebratio­n of his life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at 214 Quarry Mountain Road, Hot Springs.

Loretta Barnes Slyby, age 87, of Hot Springs, died Monday, July 30, 2018.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1931, in Sheridan, the daughter of George Walter Barnes and Lula Leona Barnes. On May 21, 1949, she married Herbert Slyby. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Lee Barnes, Chester Barnes and Jay Barnes.

Loretta was a member of Caney Valley Missionary Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Slyby; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Patricia Slyby; one daughter, Bonita McGhee, all of Hot Springs; six grandchild­ren; seven great-grandchild­ren; one brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Lyndle Barnes, of Hensley; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home chapel, Hot Springs, with Brother Todd Self officiatin­g.

Interment will be in Sweet Home Cemetery, near Amity.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today.
