Aluminum recycling fun facts:

• Once an aluminum can is recycled, it can be part of a new can within six weeks.

• More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.

• An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now.

• 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute.

• During the time it takes you to read this sentence, 50,000

12-ounce aluminum cans are made.

• There is no limit to the amount of times aluminum cans be recycled.

• At one time, aluminum was more valuable than gold.

• Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours, or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline. Call 321-6911 to participat­e in the Earth Angel program. Pickup days:

Monday and Thursday — brush. Brush that is picked up by CAPS is ground and recycled into compost. Brush must be cut

6 feet in length or less, and no larger than 24 inches in diameter. Please do not mix with trash, wood, paper, cans, bottles or wire.

Tuesday and Friday — miscellane­ous. Items to be picked up include items such as couches, mattresses, furniture, wood and building materials. Do not mix items for pick up with household garbage, plastic bags, cardboard, paint, batteries or tires.

Wednesday — metal. Items to be picked up include dishwasher­s, washers and dryers, refrigerat­ors, water heaters and metal items only. Please remove old food from refrigerat­ors and freezers. Pickup times:

Items scheduled for pickup must be placed curbside by 6 a.m. We offer special assistance to the disabled and elderly. We also need at least 20 feet of overhead clearance to safely operate equipment. Please do not place items under low power lines or tree limbs.

Residents may have two collection­s per year at no cost, up to one ton on each. To schedule a CAPS pickup, call 501-321-6921.

Last week, Earth Angels of Hot Springs recycled: 104 pounds, aluminum cans; 3.465 pounds, newspaper; 656 pounds, corrugated cardboard; 59,260 pounds, yard waste; 76,600 pounds, commercial cardboard. A total of 70.04 tons of recyclable materials were kept out of the landfill.
