Wednesday Night Poetry features Little Rock poet

-

Little Rock poet LaTasha “StoryTellHer” Moore is this week’s feature for Wednesday Night Poetry at Kollective Coffee+Tea, 110 Central Ave.

The regular open mic session for all poets begins at 6:30 p.m. and Moore will perform at 7 p.m., followed by a second open mic. Admission is free and open to all ages.

The stage name StoryTellHer came from Moore’s mother telling her that her poems sounded more like speeches or stories. “As I tell these stories, the stories tell me. I used to write poems on topics other people asked me to write about. Now I write to express myself,” she said in a news release.

Moore initially took up public speaking in junior high school reciting other people’s works, then in 2011 began writing her own poetry. She considers herself an on-demand poet in that she will often make up poems about topics suggested by others. In 2013, she won the Southwestern Black Leadership Conference poetry competition. In 2014, she received the Arkansas State University Wilson Award.

A native of Falcon, Ill., Moore was a high school Spanish teacher for a number of years. In 2017, she graduated from UAMS in Little Rock with a master’s degree in public health. Currently, she is a full-time mother for her newborn son, Khari.

“I am working to build myself as a poet,” Moore said. “I am inspired by the experience of being a millennial battling the ups and downs of having to be an adult in my 20s.”
