Third Thursday Concert Series kicks off this week at Big Chill

-

Side Hustle Productions will present the monthly Third Thursday Concert Series beginning Thursday at The Big Chill, 910 Higdon Ferry Road.

Showtimes are at 8 p.m. The concert series is sponsored in part by The Big Chill, Prince & Tuohey CPA, KUHS Community Radio, The Mojo Box and Lost Highway radio shows.

This week’s show will feature Alabama-born and Southern-raised Brett “Bad Blood” Benton, currently living in Washington State. Benton will be joined by drummer Arturo Marcos for their upcoming tour.

Benton, born in Pensacola, Fla., left his home city in 2016 to perform his style of delta and country blues around the world. He has played local, regional and national festivals and was a semifinalist in the 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. He was recently signed to Seattle’s Knick Knack Records.

Benton has shared the stage with Cedric Burnside & Trenton Ayers, Walter Trout, Selwyn Birchwood, the Reverend Payton’s Big Damn Band and west coast staples The 44’s and Hillstomp. Known for his fierce rhythmic finger picking, slide guitar and booming voice, Benton’s raw style is best heard one of two ways: paying homage to its roots with solo, acoustic slide guitar and “stompin’ and hollerin’,” or electric guitar alongside a heavy, relentless and dynamic style of drums that really emphasizes what hill country blues is all about, a news release said. For either style being played, both remain true to the nature of country blues while also retrofitted with grit and a bit of heaviness from the modern times.

Ethan “Lil’ Skinny” Kuntz will open the show. All proceeds from the show will go to the Unknown Legends Musicians Relief Fund, a nonprofit for Arkansas-based musicians without health care or insurance.

Tickets are $10 at the door with reserved seating available for $15.
