Local man charged with abusing daughters

- REBEKAH HEDGES

A local man was arrested Wednesday for the alleged “severe physical abuse” of his daughters, ages 5 and 7, after burn marks were found on their arms and hands and severe bruising was seen on the older child at their home earlier this month, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Remy Martin Dorn,

29, who lists a Lakeland Drive address, was charged with one count of second-degree domestic battery, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Dorn remained in custody on zero

bond Thursday and is set to appear in Garland County District Court today.

Lake Hamilton School District Superintendent Steve Anderson confirmed in a statement to the newspaper Thursday that Dorn is employed at the district as a school bus driver, but has not worked around students since the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. None of the allegations involve the school, or incidents that occurred at the school, according to Anderson.

“When LHSD first learned that the employee was under investigation, the administration spoke with him and by agreement he has remained off work and off campus pending receipt of further information concerning the investigation,” Anderson said in the statement.

“He did attend one required bus driver training on campus before school started, however, no students were on campus at that time. It is my understanding that criminal charges against him have now been filed. Our attorney will obtain what information he can about the matter from authorities and we will then determine what action should (be) taken with respect to his employment and, if warranted, termination will be recommended in accordance with the Public School Employee Fair Hearing Act,” Anderson said.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Aug. 3, Hot Springs police Detective Hunter Scott and an Arkansas Department of Health Services worker went to Dorn’s Lakeland Drive residence in reference to a report of child abuse.

The DHS worker informed Dorn that his two daughters were both being removed from the home due to “signs of severe physical abuse.”

According to the affidavit, the 7-year-old had “severe visible bruising” on her face, forehead, eyes, arms, legs, back and buttocks and several burn marks on her arms and hands. The 5-yearold daughter had identical burn marks on her arms and hands.

When asked about the bruising on the 7-yearold’s face, Dorn reportedly said, “I did that” because she had “cursed at him” so “he hit her in the face,” motioning with his hand, the affidavit said.

When asked about the burn marks, Dorn reportedly said he was unaware of any burns on them.
