Garvan Woodland Gardens announces September events
Garvan Woodland Gardens has announced its September schedule of events. All events are at the botanical garden, 550 Arkridge Road, unless otherwise noted.

September art exhibit
• Sept. 1-30 — Traditional Art Guild Art Exhibit, Magnolia Room.
The Traditional Art Guild of Hot Springs will present its People’s Choice Award Show at Garvan Woodland Gardens throughout the month of September. Paintings of nature subjects in all mediums (oil, acrylic, pastels and watercolor) will be presented. The art will also be offered for sale by the artists with a portion of the sale going to projects at the garden. Visitors’ votes determine the art show winners.
Art exhibits in the Magnolia Room are free and open to the public.
Special event
• Sept. 22 — Trash Bash, 11 a.m. to noon, Klipsch Amphitheatre.
To participate, visit one of the following check stations from 8-9 a.m. on the day of the event to sign in and pick up supplies:
• Lake Hamilton — Hill Wheatley Park, 688 Majestic Lodge Road; Andrew H. Hulsey State Fish Hatchery, 350 Fish Hatchery Road; Sunnybook Landing, near Entergy Park, 530 Lakepark Drive; and Sunset Cove Marina, 180 Lodge Road.
• Lake Catherine — Carpenter Dam Park, 301 Powerhouse; Munro Shoe Factory Boat Ramp, before
216 Elmwood; and Lake Catherine State Park, 1200 Catherine Park Road.
• Ouachita River — White Water Park, Malvern.
Pick up trash from nearby shorelines, roads and ditches and return the bags of trash to a designated check station by 11 a.m., where prize drawing tickets will be given out based on amount of trash collected, then visit the garden’s amphitheater for a free T-shirt, barbecue lunch, entertainment, and a drawing for a computer and other prizes.
Health and fitness
• Sept. 10-Nov. 16 — Group health walks, 9 a.m., meet at the Welcome Center. Pets and strollers are welcome.
On Mondays, walk 3 miles in 52 minutes with fitness buff Sharon Turrentine.
On Wednesdays, walk 2-plus miles at a challenging pace alongside nature enthusiast Ginger Ladehoff.
Admission is free for members
and $15 for nonmembers. No reservations required.
• Sept. 22 — Vinyasa Yoga Series, 2-3 p.m., Great Lawn.
Local yogi Audra Ladehoff presents a onehour session. Vinyasa yoga is a flowing practice linking breath to movement, a continuous sequence of poses that flows from one to the next with an assigned inhale or exhale, resulting in a fluid, expressive class that is perfect for those who like to move.

Horticulture
• Sept. 29 — Bonsai Series: Beginner’s Specimen Start, 10 a.m. to noon, Weyerhaeuser Bonsai Learning Center.
Garvan Horticulturist Bryan Carlan leads a hands-on workshop for beginning bonsai gardeners. He will discuss plant selection, container and materials sources, and techniques for producing a bonsai specimen that will endure the years. Each participant will produce a potted bonsai-style tree.

• Sept. 15 — Indoor Gardening with Hydroponic Systems, Magnolia Room.
Nolen Buffalo, owner and operator of The Water Buffalo in Little Rock, presents a fourpart review of proven techniques for the following: starting seeds, transplanting seedlings, caring for an adult plant and cloning a plant.
For this introductory to intermediate level class, background experience with indoor gardening will be helpful. Arrive early to receive a ticket for door prizes.

Culture and community
• Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 4-Nov. 15,
9:30 a.m. to noon, Magnolia Room.
The Education Department at Garvan Gardens offers a 10-week session for members who are interested in learning or practicing the Spanish language. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and will follow an introductory curriculum with all textbooks and/or workbooks provided. No previous experience is needed. The program will feature keys to pronunciation, vocabulary and phrase building, verb conjugation, listening skills, and cultural differences among Spanish-speaking countries.

• Sept. 15 — Landscape Drawing Series,
9:30 a.m. to noon, Weyerhaeuser Bonsai Learning Center.
Local artist Ginger Ladehoff teaches a drawing workshop to students interested in nature still life drawing, landscapes, and trees. Ladehoff is a local artist, art educator and nature enthusiast. She loves to express herself through drawing outdoors. While all materials are provided, participants are encouraged to bring their own pencils if they have them. Using the garden as inspiration, each student will produce original artwork.

• Sept. 22 — Fly Fishing 101, Weyerhaeuser Bonsai Learning Center and Great Lawn.
Ouachita Outdoor Outfitters presents an introductory class for the beginner fly-fisher. Following a brief discussion of commonly used flies, participants will be instructed in proper casting technique.

• Sept. 29 — Introduction to Beekeeping, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Magnolia Room.
Bemis Honey Bee Farm will present a packed day of education and beekeeping fun. This class is a crash course for beginner beekeepers that features a hands-on portion at the beehives. No experience or materials required. The lecture portion touches on honeybee biology, history, beekeeping practices, hive components, and honey harvesting. Safety gear is provided, but attendees may bring their own suit and gloves if preferred. Sign-in, refreshments, and lunch orders begin at 8:30 a.m.

Photography
Julia Mann is a local photographer who has studied under professionals who have been published in Time, Newsweek, and numerous national and regional publications and has photographs displayed in the Smithsonian. Her own work has garnered many awards, including several Best of Shows in local, state, and regional competitions.
• Sept. 8 — Golf Cart Photo Safari with Julia Mann, 3-7 p.m., Magnolia Room.
Join Mann on a Photography Safari to some of the most picturesque locations in the garden. The Photo Safari is geared toward beginner and intermediate level adults; however, all skill levels are welcome. The class will start with a brief introduction to photography composition and some quick tips for finding and making better images with the camera and equipment you already have. Then, the class will board the golf carts and spend some quality time capturing images from the best spots in the garden. Students will work with DSLRs, point and shoots, camera phones and tablets. A basic understanding of how to operate your camera is required.
