Oaklawn Center on Aging (OCOA) has ongoing free workshops for the Garland County

community. Our evidence-based workshops are Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP), Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP), Diabetes Self Management Program (DSMP), and A Matter of Balance (AMOB).

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) is a workshop for people with diabetes, people diagnosed as pre-diabetes and people who live with someone with diabetes. Facilitators teach about diabetes, how diabetes affects the body, blood sugar levels and what they mean, how to use a glucometer, meal planning, setting goals for proper nutrition, physical activity, regular checkups with their physicians, and consistent medication use. The workshop includes participant activities and sharing information with the group. There are many visual and tactile aids to help participants understand what is really going on with their body and how elevated blood sugars cause problems. The goal of this workshop is to empower individuals to manage and control their diabetes or to stop it before it becomes a diagnosis of diabetes. In teaching people this, we can reduce complications such as blindness, amputations of lower extremities, kidney failure, heart disease and stroke. The class meets for two hours, once a week, for six consecutive weeks.

Chronic Disease Self Management Program is a workshop for people with asthma, heart disease, arthritis, Parkinson’s and other chronic health concerns. This program meets for six sessions, once a week for two and a half hours and is facilitated by certified leaders. CDSMP teaches practical skills for living a healthy life with chronic health conditions and builds confidence for managing your health, staying active and enjoying life.

Diabetes Self Management Program is a workshop for people with diabetes, people diagnosed as pre-diabetes and people who live with someone with diabetes. DSMP teaches practical skills for living a healthy life with diabetes in six sessions, once a week for two and a half hours.

A Matter of Balance is specifically designed to reduce the fear of falling, stop the fear of falling cycle and improve activity levels of older adults. Oaklawn Center on Aging (OCOA), offers free exercise classes; Tai Chi, Zumba Gold and Drums Alive to the Garland County community. Tai Chi is an evidenced based exercise based on nature. The gentle

flowing movements strengthen the body and improve mental and physical balance and flexibility. Regular practice of tai chi improves chronic conditions, such as arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. Tai chi also helps to make your immune system stronger, reduces stress, increases energy and enhances self-esteem. Dr. Paul Lam says, “those who practice tai chi become like a tree or river, calm on the outside, but full of internal strength, capable of withstanding whatever life may throw their way.” Zumba Gold is an exercise class dancing to Latin music. You will have fun working up a sweat while getting your cardiovascular workout! Drums Alive is an exercise program using drum sticks, a cushioned surface and fun music. The goal of drums alive is to improve the participants’ lives physically and psychologically through a unique sensorimotor drumming program involving drum sticks, an exercise ball and music. The primary goal of the Drums Alive program is creating a “whole mind, whole body” experience for all participating. Certified instructors lead these programs and all three of these exercise programs can be adjusted to meet the need of the individual participant. Since that date, Levi Hospital has gained a reputation of providing superior care within its defined services. Levi has always focused on meeting the community health needs, and as such, has modified its programming to address those critical, unmet and under-served needs. The hospital is well recognized for its work within Outpatient Rehabilitation, and for the fourth year running received The Sentinel-Record Reader’s Choice Award for best Outpatient Physical Therapy Provider. In addition, the Hospital is well-recognized throughout the entire State for its work with those with psychiatric disorders, as it is one of the few hospitals that will take patients from 18 years of age and older. As an adjunct to the Inpatient Programming, the hospital offers a well-structured Intensive Outpatient Psychiatric Program for those who need continued support following an inpatient psychiatric stay or for those whose psychiatric needs do not require the acuity of an Inpatient Program.
