Lakeside survives Sheridan with comeback in scrimmage

Lakeside edged out Sheridan, 34-28, Friday night at Austin Stadium with a comefrom-behind effort in the second half.

Sheridan scored twice in the final four minutes of the first half to take a 28-20 lead into halftime. Lakeside answered minutes into the second half.

The Rams stepped up on defense to take a fumble recovery into the end zone to make the score 28-27. Still down one point in the final quarter, junior Chase Davis ran for a 5-yard touchdown to give the home team the victory.

Lakeside started the scrimmage quickly with a 30-yard touchdown run from speedy sophomore Isaac Echols. The Rams led, 7-0, with 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Sheridan responded quick with Alden Lucas‘s 65-yard touchdown run to tie the game 7-7. Midway through the first quarter, Lakeside senior running back Dorecus Ferguson’s 49-yard run took him to the 1-yard line. He later scored for one of his two touchdowns in the game.

Sheridan’s Montana Korte’s tied the game at 14-14 in the second quarter. Ferguson scored his second touchdown on a 15-yard run midway through the second quarter. Lakeside failed to convert the extra point on a bad snap, leaving the score at 20-14.

Lakeside sophomore quarterbac­k Will Ross was 15-for26 for 125 yards with one intercepti­ons. Ferguson finished with 72 yards on six attempts and two touchdowns, all in the first half.

Three senior receivers combined for more than 100 yards receiving for Lakeside. Senior Richard Gaston had four catches for 30 yards, Fleming made three catches for 32 yards and Sawyer Lamb had 45 yards on five catches.

Lucas led Sheridan with 120 yards and one touchdown in the first half.

The Rams held their Blue and Gold scrimmage on Tuesday before hosting Sheridan on Friday. Lakeside is scheduled to open the season on Aug. 31 with their first meeting against the Lake Hamilton Wolves since 1999.
