Friday night football

CENTERPOINT — Haskell Harmony Grove showed that the move up to Class 4A was warranted as the Cardinals rolled over the Centerpoint Knights, 38-20, Friday night at Diamond Bank Stadium.

Both teams put up a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, but two successful conversion plays by the Cardinals (1-0) gave the visiting team a 10-point lead.

The Knights (0-1) had a big goalline stand to kick off the fourth quarter, keeping the Cardinals stopped at the 2-yard line. While Centerpoint did get out of the shadow of their own en dzone, the offense was forced to punt to end the possession.

The Cardinals, working their way down the field while burning the clock, managed to get another touchdown with 3:23 left on the clock, using nearly seven minutes on the 77-yard drive.

Harmony Grove got on the board first, scoring on their first possession on a one-yard run from William Newton, but the snap was bungled on the point-after attempt, leaving the holder without a chance for the end zone to leave the score at 6-0 with 7:53 left in the opening period.

The Knights made a strong drive, turning the ball over at the Cardinals’ 18, but after four plays, Centerpoint got the ball back. They were able to maintain the ball, scoring their first touchdown, but the conversion play was no good.

Centerpoint falls to 0-1 to start the season and will travel to Murfreesboro next week. The Cardinals (1-0) host Gurdon next week.
