Mary Elizabeth Sastra, age 98, passed away peacefully on Aug. 25, 2018. A caring wife and mother, she was truly loved by family, friends and colleagues.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack Stewart; second husband, Joseph Sastra; brother, Larry Clark; and sister, Jessie Hoy.

She is survived by her son, John Stewart, of Hot Springs; daughterin-law, Vanessa Stewart, of Hot Springs; son, Patrick Stewart, of Hot Springs; son, Tim Stewart, of Ocala, Fla.; son, Steven Stewart, of Asheville, N.C.; stepchildr­en, Shane Coleman, of Bellevue, Texas, Gig Manwarren, of Norwich, N.Y., Cindy Strain, of Guilford, N.Y., Mike Sastra, of Endicott, N.Y., and Kim Lotierzo, of Winter Park, Fla.; as well as numerous grandchild­ren, great-grandchild­ren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary was born in Delancey, N.Y., on July 31, 1920. She grew up on a dairy farm in the Catskills and helped with farm chores from the age of 4. She was extremely hard-working and lived a life of service to others. She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, based in Washington, D.C. A resident of Hot Springs since 1959, she worked at Libby Memorial Physical Therapy Center and as a nurses’ aide at Ouachita Hospital for a total of 25 years. In both places she assisted with the care of thousands of patients, helping them heal from illness and injury. She was known for her gentle nature, her laughter and her kindness.

The family would like to thank all the staff from the Arkansas Agency on Aging, Lake Hamilton Health and Rehab, and Arkansas Hospice for the extraordin­ary care they provided her during her final days and years.
