Fountain Lake outclasses Lakeside

- JAMES LEIGH

FOUNTAIN LAKE — Andrew Roberson split time with Colson Simpson Friday night as the Fountain Lake Cobras rolled to a 40-27 victory over Lakeside at Allen Tillery Field.

The Cobras (2-0) got things started off much like their season-opening victory over Hot Springs as Ahman Johnson picked off a pass from Lakeside quarterback Taylor Gillham, carrying it 56 yards back to the end zone. Joe Murphy’s kick made it 7-0 with 20 seconds off the clock in the opening quarter.

Lakeside (0-2) responded with a touchdown of their own with 6:07 left in the period. Gillham found Sawyer Lamb on a 26-yard pass. Josh Hixson’s kick was good to knot the score at 7-7.

Fountain Lake quickly took control, however. The Cobras scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 20-7 lead before making it 26-15 at the half.

The Cobras started off the second half strong, scoring with 5:13 left to make it 32-15 on a 58-yard pass from Ian Lacy to Johnson before the Rams cut the lead.

Lakeside scored with 2:34 left on a one-yard run by Gillham, pulling within 32-21 after a failed conversion pass.

With just seven seconds off the clock in the final period, Lacy found Johnson on a 46-yard touchdown reception to take a 40-21 lead after Simpson ran it in for the conversion.

The Rams added a fourth-quarter touchdown to set the final score.

Fountain Lake is scheduled to host Dover on Friday. Lakeside is set to travel to Malvern for the final non-conference game of the regular season.
