Mount Ida too much for Jessieville
MOUNT IDA — Mount Ida scored three times in the second period as the junior Lions rolled to a 34-12 win over Jessieville Thursday night at Preston Stidman Field.
Mount Ida got things rolling early as Jacob Woodfield scored on a 33-yard run and on the conversion play to put the home team ahead, 8-0, with 3:31 off the clock in the first period.
Jessieville (1-1) struggled to get its offense rolling from the start, but it managed to get on the scoreboard with 19.2 seconds remaining in the first half as Matthew Huff ran the ball in from the nine-yard line. Huff was stopped on the conversion play, leaving the halftime score at 28-6.
Mount Ida scored again with 5:13 left in the third frame as halfback Baylor Bates connected with Jack Hoeksema on an 18-yard pass for the end zone to put the team up, 34-6. The conversion play by Woodfield was stopped by the Jessieville defense.
With 2:32 remaining in the third quarter, Jessieville pulled within 34-12 as quarterback Peyton Leveritt connected with Skyler Miller on a 19-yard pass for the end zone. Huff was again stopped on the conversion play, ending the scoring in the game.
Leveritt was 6-for-14 passing for 82 yards with one interception and rushed for two yards. Luke Goessman was 1-for-2 passing for one yard.
Huff had three catches for 42 yards, Dylan Daley had two for 21 and Miller had two for 18. Huff also had 17 carries for 69 yards. Jessieville
combined for 150 yards of offense, recovered two fumbles and had just three penalties for
35 yards in the game. Mount Ida quarterback Karter Rowton was 1-for-1 passing for 25 yards to Gavin Summitt. Bates was 1-for-1 for
18 yards to Hoeksema. Woodfield led on the ground with 23 carries for 185 of Mount Ida’s 254 yards, and Bates had six for 24. Mount Ida had nine penalties for 70 yards.
Jessieville’s loss came on the heels of last week’s 40-0 win at Magnet Cove.
Goessman was 3-for-6 passing for seven yards with three carries for 14. Huff had an outstanding performance with 11 carries for 276 yards.
The junior Lions tallied 302 offensive yards with 295 of those coming on the ground. Magnet Cove had 52 total yards of offense.
Jessieville will travel to Mayflower next Thursday.
