Colonial Dames to hear national anthem history

The Col. John Washington Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hot Springs Country Club. Featured speaker Beverly Salisbury will talk about the “History of the Star-Spangled Banner.”

Salisbury is a native of Alabama and holds a bachelors degree from Auburn University and two graduate degrees from the University of Memphis in English. She retired to Hot Springs Village after a 27-year career as an English teacher at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis, where she taught primarily world and American literature, but also compositio­n.

HSV Evening Lions meet Thursday

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — The Hot Springs Village Evening Lions Club will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in Room 6 at the Coronado Center. Fellowship and a buffet begins at 5 p.m. Jeff Meek, editor of the Village Voice, will discuss “Newspaper 101.”

Guests are welcome. Make a difference in people’s lives by joining and helping Lions in their projects, such as bingo, to support charities that assist the sight- and hearing-impaired, promote diabetes awareness and support juvenile cancer research.
