Rams go 5-5 in Russellville tournament

RUSSELLVILLE — Lakeside’s volleyball varsity team faced off against several tough teams from around the state over the weekend.

In pool play, the Rams split sets against Little Rock Central, lost two to Russellville and defeated Vilonia, 2-0.

Lakeside took a 25-21 win in the first set against Central before falling, 25-23 in the second. Molly Stineman led the team defensively with eight digs, and Olivia Lawrence added four digs with a team-leading 15 assists and three kills. Claire Monte led the offense with five kills.

Russellville jumped out on the Rams early, taking both sets, 25-11, 25-18. Lawrence had eight assists, and Adachi Igbokidi had two kills.

The Rams battled it out with Vilonia, taking wins of 25-23 and 25-24, the latter being the only win by one in pool play. Lawrence had 15 assists with three digs, two aces, three kills and two blocks, and Igbokidi had seven kills with three blocks. Stineman led the team with 11 digs, and Hattie Anne Douglas had five.

Advancing to the silver bracket, the Rams took on Russellville’s junior varsity squad, winning 25-15 in both sets. Lawrence had 16 assists with six aces, four kills, five digs and three blocks. Stineman had 11 digs to lead the team’s defense, and Mary Catherine Cowen added three digs. Offensively, Monte led the team with six kills, Katie Ballard added five and Meghan Fuller Freeman had three.

The team’s tournament play ended with a 2-0 loss to Greene County Tech, 25-18,

25-14. Lawrence had 14 assists and seven digs, Stineman had

10 digs and Igbokidi had five kills with two blocks.

“It was not what I was hoping for,” said head coach Rhonda Thigpen. “This was a chance to see how we stand with other tough programs in the state. We got off to a slow start and had some bright spots but need to focus and get better together.”

Rams defeat Conway at Hot Springs CC

Lakeside’s golf teams picked up a pair of wins Thursday as they defeated Conway at Hot Springs Country Club.

The Rams carded a season-low 294 while Conway finished with a 320.

Wil Griffin led the Rams with a career-low 68. Griffin had a run of four birdies and an eagle on the day, carding birdies on 15, 16, 17 and 18 before shooting an eagle on one.

Griffin Wuensch and Carson Garner both tallied a 75, and Nathan Ahlers and Cooper Gordon turned in a 76. Conway’s Jackson Hutchins led the team with a 77.

The Lady Rams finished with a 281 while Conway tallied a 328.

Abbylea Huett carded an 85 to lead the Lady Rams. Carly Orr shot an 86, Riley Langston had a 110 and Lilly Crabtree finished with a 111.

The Rams will play at El Dorado Country Club today in the Class 5A-South conference tournament.

Mena, Nashville take FL golf matches in HSV

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Mena and Nashville placed first in the boys’ and girls’ competitions, respectively, Thursday hosted by Fountain Lake at the Magellan Golf Course.

Fountain Lake placed second in both boys’ and girls’ play.

Daniel Davis led the Bearcats with a medalist round of evenpar 36. They finished with a team score of 126.

The Cobras compiled a team score of 133. Christopher Desfassiaux paced the Cobras with a round of 40.

Lachlan McMurray and Jack Wurz added rounds of 46 and 47, respectively. Jordan Mungle carded a 50.

“The boys played well today,” said Fountain Lake coach Michael Blees. “Mena has a very talented squad and has a good shot to win Class 4A state. I still like our chances going into district next week.”

The 3A-5 conference tournament will be hosted by Centerpoint at the Glenwood Country Club. The tournament is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Members of the 3A-5 conference include Ashdown, Bismarck, Centerpoint, Glen Rose, Haskell Harmony Grove, Jessieville, Prescott and Smackover.

Jessieville’s Aaron Ford shot a round of 53 on Thursday at Magellan. Teammate Chase Pederson carded a 55.

Ellen Spigner led the Lady Scrappers with a medalist round of 38. Nashville shot a team score of 151.

The Lady Cobras claimed second with a team score of

191. Camille McDaniel led the team with a round of 61. Elaine Altimus and Sydney Mungle each shot 65.

“The girls have showed up and worked hard all year,” Blees said. “I have seen improvement every week and hope they really progress through the winter and spring.”

Jessieville placed third at

197. Kelsey Saveall led the Lady Lions with a round of 65. Teammates Callie Pederson and Cassidy Tucker each shot 66.

Junior Rams defeat rival Camden Fairview

Lakeside’s junior Rams hosted Camden Fairview Thursday, defeating both the eighth and ninth grade teams.

The junior high team (8-5-1, 3-0) downed the junior Cardinals, 25-16, 25-11. Bethany Mode led the team with four kills and two blocks, Sarah Porter had three blocks with three kills and Brooklyn Bourland had eight service points with six assists. Annelise McAlister had four aces among her seven service points while adding three digs, four assists and a kills.

The eighth grade team (6-2,

3-0) rolled to wins of 25-8 and

25-12. Bourland led the team with 14 service points, including four aces.

Benefit golf tournament set for Oct. 8 at HSCC

A four-person scramble is set for Oct. 8 to benefit the Cooperative Christian Ministries and Clinic.

All flights will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start with a luncheon set from 11:30 a.m. until tournament start. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams following the tournament.
